The result is that science will never fully separate the impact of biological and environmental forces in absolutely determining “causes” for physiology, development, and behavior. No doubt, there are genetic influences for some psychological disorders, such as mood disorders (Tsuang & Faraone, 1990), schizophrenia (Prescott & Gottesman, 1993), and anxiety (Torgersen, 1990). The way and to what degree, however, these genetic influences interact with environmental, experiential, and historical interactions of the dimensions in the past are far from being determined.

In our humanistic age, we have come to believe that altruism is the same as unconditional positive regard (Rogers, 1961). Unconditional positive regard primarily relates to accepting individuals just as they are, without having expectations that they will change. Altruism, however, carries the high price of sacrifice. For instance, if two people are on the brink of starvation and there is enough food for only one, the person who gives up his or her request for or right to the food is loving altruistically.

Our assessments of individuals, diagnostic codes, and treatment goals are often driven by the patient’s symptomology. Diagnosis is important for communication within the scientific community but offers only a few tools for treatment. However, the previously proposed understanding of the individual psychology dimension offers the psychotherapist an opportunity to view human beings outside of their symptomology. First, it deals with the most basic elements that form human feelings and behaviors. Although we do not propose that the previous model is sufficient for understanding the total complexity of human beings, it offers a rudimentary understanding of the most basic elements with which humans construct ideas about themselves and actions toward the environment.
