The scores in a leptokurtic distribution tend to be clustered much more closely around the mean than they are in either a mesokurtic or platykurtic distribution. Because of the latter, the value of the standard deviation for a leptokurtic distribution will be smaller than the standard deviation for the latter two distributions (if we assume the range of scores in all three distributions is approximately the same). The tails of a leptokurtic distribution are heavier/thicker than the tails of a mesokurtic distribution.
