We're not arguing. I don't think we are. We can't be because I'm not talking. I'm listening. I'm half listening, but there are no real answers to anything she's saying so I don't need to listen properly. The car stops at some lights. I want to get out and walk off somewhere but I can't because I know that would upset my mother and she's sick. I look at the sky instead. I have to squint. I'm tired. I want to put the radio on so we don't have to talk to each other, or I mean, so she doesn't have to talk to me.

My dad has hidden a couple more under a work bench. It seems stupid to hide two of them, like knowing he'd got through 10 would be worse than knowing he'd got through 8. It suggests a totally skewered sense of shame. He was drunk when he hid them, so they're easy to spot. The carrier bag that they're in is unravelling slowly. Maybe he keeps them for an emergency although I have trouble trying to work out what the emergency would be. No doubt something emotional. My dad would sleep there all day if nobody wakes him.

Pictures of themselves, looking ahead and stuff. They're teenagers so they can do things like that without being inappropriate. They haven't started pretending yet. I suppose she must have wanted bright colours. Perhaps she thought if it was a party then her friends might remember her as more exceptional 59 than she had been in life. They're holding pink and green balloons, with tears in their eyes, and sort of smiling, like they aren't quite sure. Her main picture is her as seen from above. It's all Photoshopped in colours as well so I can't tell what her face really looked like.
